Will's Letter To Family

 “Mother, Father and little sister.

Today I am turning seventeen. I know that writing to you means I am going against the law, so I will probably rip this letter when I am done writing it. Like how I did every other birthday from seventeen. But I’ll write it anyway to outline the occasion - like someone that every year goes to see a tomb of dearly beloved. Who knows if you remember today, seventeen years ago, that you have a child? Who knows if you tihnk of me and imagine my life here at the institution in London? I doubt that you guys can imagine it. Here, it’s all different from our house, surrounded by mountains with an immense blue sky and a green that you can lose your eyes in. Here, everything is black and gray and brown and the sunsets are painted of blood and smoke.

Who knows if you worry about the fact that I’m alone or how mother used to do when I was cold and go out under the rain without my hat? Here, no-one worries about these details. The risk of being killed from one moment to another is very high and the possibility of a cold has no relevance. Who knows if you knew that I heard you the day you came looking for me, when I was twelve years old. I hid under the bed to keep away from the sound of your voice yelling my name out loud, but I heard you. I heard mum because she was looking for her little one. I used to bite my hands until they bled but I didn’t come down. I often asked myself often why you left me a Nephilim. I don’t know if you believe that they were cruel or cold but to tell you the truth, I didn’t find them like that.

Charlotte in particular is very gentle with me, without knowing that I don’t merit her attentions. Henry is crazy like a horse, but he’s a really good person. Emma would have laughed a lot with him. There is little good to say about Jessamine, but she is harmless. On the contrary, there is a lot of good to say about Jem: He is the brother that father said I should have had. Blood of my blood - although we’re not even related. For all that I had to lose in my life, his friendship I have gained.

By the way, there’s a new arrival at home. Her name is Tessa. Do you know when the clouds of the ocean gather on top of a mountain? There. That gray is the exact colour of her eyes.

And now I will tell you a terrible truth, since I never intend to send this letter. I came here to the Institute because I had nowhere else to go. I did not expect it to ever be home, but in the time I have been here I have discovered that I am a true Shadowhunter. In some way my blood tells me that this is what I was born to do.If only I had known before and gone with the Clave the first time they asked me, perhaps I could have saved Ella’s life. Perhaps I could have saved my own.

Your Son,
